Chief Technology Officer
Masood Roashan brings more than 25 years of software design, implementation, teaching and management experience to PenChecks, where he is responsible for managing and overseeing the company’s technology operations. Prior to joining PenChecks, Masood served as project manager at WorldxChange Communications, where he managed seven developers to write a billing system that is now deployed in multiple countries around the world. He also served as Director of IT at the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, where he revamped the ticketing system and brought new technology solutions to daily operations. Masood studied civil engineering at Kabul University, and continued his education at the National Education Center, where he received his diploma in Information Systems. An active member of his religious congregation, Masood has served three two-year terms on its Board of Directors.
Masood is one of those rare IT specialists who understands that the value of technology lies not so much what it is, but what it does to make life easier for those who use it. So it’s not surprising that a strong customer service orientation drives everything he does at PenChecks Trust.
Since joining the company in 2011, Masood has been tasked with keeping the company’s hardware and software systems in good working order while ensuring that they support the internal needs of staff and the external needs of clients. With the recent addition of Kevin Smallen as Vice President of Information Technology, Masood can now spend more time focusing on what he likes best – working on new software designs and developing new products and services to make life easier for PenChecks Trust clients.
“My job is to make sure that we provide the facility and utility to support our clients in doing what they need to do,” says Masood. “From TPAs to plan sponsors, financial institutions and plan participants, we have many different types of user groups, so the challenge is ensuring our proprietary systems can accommodate their different needs. Of course, safety and security are paramount. After that, the #1 goal is making our technology systems easy and intuitive for all clients to use.”/
Always Moving Forward
PenChecks Trust has a well-earned reputation as the leader in innovative, scalable distribution technologies, and Masood sees a large part of his job as keeping the company at the forefront of the industry. For example, to effectively use the company’s P3 payment portal and trust accounting system (TAS), clients need to be able to provide new data as well as access data already in the system. To facilitate this process, Masood continually improves and updates the system’s APIs – programming interfaces that allow clients to access only their data while keeping the rest of the database secure.
He has also plays a key role in the ongoing development of proprietary software such as P3 and TAS, which serve as the backbone of the company’s innovative distribution services. In particular, Masood focuses on developing new ways to modify these proprietary programs to improve functionality for clients, and is currently working on upgrades to both applications. These will include the ability for clients to upload data directly into P3 without submitting a file to PenChecks Trust, simpler importing and exporting of data, the ability to create distributions in batches, and more.
Like many PenChecks Trust staffers, Masood joined the company for its commitment to ongoing innovation and the family culture ingrained in the business.
“PenChecks Trust is a small business that acts like a big business in terms of providing opportunities to grow and make things happen,” he says. “I believe in the company’s mission of reuniting workers with their retirement funds. I also love the challenge of constantly looking ahead to develop new products and services for our clients. That keeps me excited about coming in to work every day.”
With three adult children having left the nest, Masood has plenty of time to indulge in leisure activities off the job. He enjoys swimming, walking on the beach and other outdoors activities, as well as family get-togethers. He is also an active member of his religious congregation, and has served three terms on its Board of Directors.
